Underground Academy · The Underground Business Blueprint
A four-day classroom program that takes a licensed plumbing or contracting company from “we sub out the dig work” to running a profitable sewer, drain, septic and underground division. Taught by a contractor who has been in the trench since 1979.
U.S. water & sewer line construction every year — over 40% the size of all HVAC contracting.
Average revenue per underground firm, against roughly $1.32M for the average HVAC contractor.
More revenue per firm than HVAC contracting. About 17,600 firms compete for it — not 120,000.
Sources: IBISWorld, 2026 — Water & Sewer Line Construction and Heating & Air-Conditioning Contractors. Revenue-per-firm derived from industry totals and firm counts, and rounded.
Plumbing, heating and electrical all have a path — apprenticeships, coaching networks, business training. Sewer, water, drainage, excavation and restoration have almost none of it. The knowledge sits in the heads of a few experienced foremen, and the day they retire it walks off the job site with them.
That gap is the opportunity. Fewer competitors, bigger jobs, higher tickets — and very few companies running it as a business. Most owners learn the money side by losing money until they figure it out. This program is the shortcut.
Foundations. The whole trade and the iron: sewer versus septic, the methods menu, crews and fleet, OSHA and the cost of non-compliance, what it really costs to start, how to price, enterprise value, and daily demand.
The business and the money. Your true cost of doing business and a defensible billable hour, job costing, reading your financials and KPIs, marketing that generates drain calls, the CSR, in-home sales, and how to pay people.
People, safety and operations. Building the team, trench safety under OSHA Subpart P, materials and pipe, laying pipe to standard, connecting to the main, reading blueprints and tie cards, quality control, and scaling.
Restoration, wealth and wrap. Restoring asphalt, concrete and landscape to standard; warranties and reinsurance to lift sales and build wealth; and your written 90-day launch plan.

Bring the program to your company, your group, or a regional or association meeting.
Underground Advisory Group is the training arm of Spencer Contracting Corp. and Spencer Home Services — a multi-trade home services and underground utility contractor established in 1982 in Peabody, Massachusetts.
Founder Peter Holland has worked in the trade since 1979 and built and runs the sewer, drain and underground division he teaches. This is not a consultant’s theory. The trucks are still on the road.
Tell us about your company and we will send the upcoming dates, the full agenda, and pricing. No obligation.

Not ready to talk dates? Ask anything about the trade — what the iron costs, whether your market supports it, how long it takes to turn a profit. A real answer from someone who runs the division, not a sales call.
